A Longing Within
By Ruben Blue
What is the drive for us to achieve
A life that's full and happy
To achieve something we all need
So we can stay young and snappy
Deep down inside us, mostly hidden
There's a quest at the bottom of our soul
To find our lifelong mission
And achieve its ultimate goal
We need satisfaction for sanity's sake
To make our lives worth living
What will it take to fill a void
A longing for something missing
We all want somebody to love
For the loneliness within
To let our inner passions free
And let the light back in
We all want someone to hold our hand
To sing, to laugh, and to cry with
Someone to walk along the sand with
So our dreams are not just a myth
Everyone wants a soulmate
If you already have one, that's great
We all want friends and a shiny car
and plenty of food on our plate
Everyone wants a solid home
With two cats in the yard
To make our lives complete
Like a Hallmark greeting card
There's a longing to be useful
We're only here for a while
A longing to make our lives full
and bring back our happy smile
That smoldering longing ember of coal
That burns deep down in our soul
Sometimes will emit a warning glow
so others can help make us whole
That longing within us can hurt
If we never achieve it's goal
If we never find that piece of our puzzle
And our despair continues to grow
But we can't always get what we want
No matter how hard we try
We're lucky to get what we need
To not let our dreams die
The blues expresses our sadness
When we can't stop loneliness
Christians have a gospel sound
For salvation they seem to have found
Rock and roll motivates our soul
And makes our drive much stronger
Fireworks and champagne
Mark the end of each chapter
But our book isn't finished yet
Filling our longings is the quest
To finally end this empty pain
and take a load off our chest
Can we quench this hunger and thirst?
Can we ever achieve our goal?
Can we find what we are looking for?
to stop this pain in our soul?
How will we be remembered when we die?
Did we fill our dreams along the way?
Were we inspirational to anyone?
What will our tombstone say?
And even if we eventually find
That the longing within us has died
At least it gave us some hope
And at least we know we tried
